The Rare D&D Magic Item That Drives Dungeon Masters Mad: Cloak of Displacement

The Rare D&D Magic Item That Drives Dungeon Masters Mad: Cloak of Displacement

Every Dungeon Master has that magic item.

The one that seemed perfectly reasonable when you handed it out...

...until the party started using it every single combat.

For many DMs, that item is the Cloak of Displacement.

It's one of the strongest Rare magic items in D&D 5e, and once you've seen it in action, you'll quickly understand why.

"My AC Is Already High..."

We've all seen this happen.

The fighter has plate armour.

The shield is equipped.

The Defence Fighting Style is active.

Their AC is pushing 21 or 22, and they confidently stride into battle believing they're untouchable.

Then the DM smiles.

Natural 20.

Critical hit.

Suddenly half their hit points disappear, and they're wondering where it all went wrong.

High AC is fantastic - until the dice decide otherwise.

Enter the Cloak of Displacement

The Cloak of Displacement approaches defence from a completely different angle.

Rather than increasing your Armour Class, it makes you dramatically harder to hit in the first place.

While the cloak's magic is active, attack rolls against you are made with disadvantage until a hit finally connects.

That means enemies aren't simply trying to beat your AC.

They're trying to beat it while rolling two dice and taking the lower result.

Even Critical Hits Become Unlikely

One of the funniest side effects of disadvantage is what it does to critical hits.

Normally, every attack has a 5% chance of rolling a natural 20.

With disadvantage?

Both dice have to come up as 20.

That drops the probability to just 1 in 400 - or 0.25%.

Is it still possible?

Absolutely.

Is it likely?

Not even close.

When you're being attacked dozens of times across an adventuring day, those odds make a noticeable difference.

Why DMs Learn to Respect It

The cloak isn't invincible.

Once an attack successfully hits you, its illusion fades until the start of your next turn.

But that's often easier said than done.

Against monsters making only one or two attacks each round, disadvantage dramatically lowers the chance that first hit ever lands.

The result?

Players become surprisingly durable, enemy damage becomes far less consistent, and encounters can feel much easier than expected.

It's no wonder many Dungeon Masters underestimate just how powerful this Rare item really is.

Is It Worth Attuning?

Without question.

The Cloak of Displacement competes with some excellent attunement items, but few offer as much defensive value regardless of your class.

It's excellent on:

  • Fighters

  • Paladins

  • Rogues

  • Rangers

  • Monks

  • Even spellcasters who occasionally find themselves on the front line

If staying alive is your priority, it's difficult to find many Rare magic items that outperform it.

Should DMs Give One Out?

That depends on your campaign.

If your players love feeling heroic and impossible to pin down, the Cloak of Displacement is an exciting reward that creates memorable moments.

If your campaign already struggles to challenge heavily armoured characters...

...you may want to think twice before placing one in the next treasure hoard.

Like many of the best magic items in D&D, it's not overpowered because it deals huge damage.

It's overpowered because it quietly changes the maths of every single combat.
