When people talk about the best multiclass builds in D&D 5e, the same combinations always come up.
Hexblade Paladin. Sorlock. Gloom Stalker Assassin. Fighter mixed with almost anything.
They're all powerful, but they're also well-known.
If you're looking for a multiclass that comes online early, feels incredible at the table, and delivers huge damage without relying on complicated spell combinations, we think one build deserves far more attention:
Swashbuckler Rogue + Battle Master Fighter
This combination is one of the most satisfying martial multiclasses in the game, and unlike many famous builds, it doesn't require ten or more levels before it starts paying off.
Why Most Multiclass Builds Take Too Long
One of the biggest drawbacks of multiclassing is that many builds don't truly come alive until high levels.
You often have to delay key class features, Ability Score Improvements, or Extra Attack while waiting for the "combo" to finally appear.
The Swashbuckler/Battle Master avoids this problem almost entirely.
By character level 6 (Rogue 3 / Fighter 3), you've already unlocked the core interaction that makes this build so effective.
The Secret: Two Sneak Attacks Every Round
The entire build revolves around combining two subclass features:
- Rakish Audacity (Swashbuckler Rogue)
- Riposte (Battle Master manoeuvre)
Here's how it works.
On your own turn, you attack an enemy as normal, triggering Sneak Attack.
Later in the round, if that same enemy attacks you and misses, you spend a Superiority Die to use Riposte, allowing you to make a weapon attack as a reaction.
Because Sneak Attack can be used once per turn (not once per round!) you can apply Sneak Attack again during your opponent's turn.
That means:
- Sneak Attack on your turn
- Sneak Attack again on their turn
The result is an enormous increase in damage output while still feeling completely fair and rules-legal.
Why Swashbuckler Makes It Even Better
Swashbucklers are designed to duel.
Rakish Audacity lets you qualify for Sneak Attack when fighting an enemy one-on-one, even if no ally is nearby.
That means you don't need to rely on party positioning nearly as much as other rogues.
Simply isolate a target, stay in melee, and punish them whenever they miss.
Battle Master Gives You More Than Damage
Riposte is the star of the show, but Battle Master offers much more.
You'll also gain manoeuvres such as:
- Precision Attack to ensure your Sneak Attack lands.
- Brace (if your table uses Tasha's Cauldron of Everything) for another reaction attack opportunity.
- Trip Attack to control the battlefield and help your allies.
Combined with Action Surge, Second Wind, a Fighting Style, and increased durability, Battle Master shores up many of the Rogue's traditional weaknesses.
Panache Turns You Into the Perfect Duelist
As you continue levelling in Rogue, you'll eventually gain Panache.
Against hostile creatures, Panache encourages enemies to focus on you rather than your allies, creating the perfect one-on-one duel.
That means you're constantly tempting enemies into attacking you...
...and every missed attack is another opportunity to trigger Riposte and deliver yet another Sneak Attack.
Few martial characters can punish enemies for missing as effectively as this build.
Suggested Level Progression
One of the nicest aspects of this multiclass is how naturally it progresses.
Levels 1–3: Start Rogue and choose Swashbuckler.
- Sneak Attack
- Cunning Action
- Fancy Footwork
- Rakish Audacity
Levels 4–6: Take three Fighter levels.
- Fighting Style
- Action Surge
- Battle Master
- Riposte
At level 6, the build is fully online.
From there, you can continue Rogue for larger Sneak Attack dice and Panache, or invest further into Fighter for Extra Attack, more manoeuvres, and additional feats.
Is It the Strongest Multiclass in 5e?
Probably not.
But it is one of the most enjoyable.
It comes online earlier than most multiclass builds, rewards tactical positioning, creates cinematic duels, and consistently dishes out impressive damage without relying on spell slots or complicated resource management.
If you've already played the classic multiclasses and want something fresh, stylish, and surprisingly powerful, give the Swashbuckler Rogue/Battle Master Fighter a try.
