So You're Visiting The Plane Of: Ysgard

Ysgard is a plane of thunderous heroism, where glory is earned through deed and death is merely a pause between battles.

Description

Ysgard is a realm of towering mountains, endless skies, and vast seas, formed from colossal earthbergs - massive landmasses that drift through the heavens like islands upon invisible currents. These floating continents collide, grind, and slowly separate, reshaping valleys and peaks through titanic impact. Rivers spill from cliffs into open air, becoming mist before vanishing into the void below, while forests cling to sheer slopes and wind-scoured plateaus. Storms roam freely across the plane, rolling with booming thunder and crackling lightning that illuminates jagged silhouettes of stone and steel.

Inhabitants

Ysgard is home to a wide array of heroic and warlike beings. Human, dwarf, elf, and giant spirits mingle with celestial warriors, legendary heroes, and monstrous champions. Many inhabitants resemble idealized versions of mortal cultures: larger, stronger, and driven by mythic purpose.

Petitioners who arrive in Ysgard usually retain memories of their mortal lives and seek to continue the path of battle, glory, and storytelling. Great halls and mead-houses dot the plane, where warriors feast, boast, and forge rivalries that inevitably lead back to the battlefield.

Powerful outsiders such as valkyries, einherjar-like champions, and storm-born beings serve as heralds, messengers, or collectors of fallen heroes. Giants rule vast territories, often clashing with one another or testing themselves against visiting champions. Dragons, titans, and other legendary creatures roam freely, each pursuing personal codes of honor or conquest.

Gods and demigods associated with war, storms, strength, and heroism sometimes maintain realms here, attracting followers who wish to fight and die in their patrons’ names.

Adventuring in Ysgard

Adventurers in Ysgard quickly learn that the plane rewards courage and decisive action. Challenges are rarely subtle: towering monsters, rival champions, and battlefield-scale conflicts are common. Those who hesitate or rely solely on trickery may find themselves outmatched by the plane’s relentless emphasis on strength and will.
