So You're Visiting The Plane Of: Hades

So You're Visiting The Plane Of: Hades

The Grey Waste of Hades is a realm of soul-crushing apathy, where hope and passion decay into nothingness.

Description

Hades, also called the Grey Waste, is a vast Outer Plane of neutral evil that saps emotion, colour, and meaning from all who step upon its lands. It lies at the midpoint of the Lower Planes in the Great Wheel cosmology, acting as a dark mirror that strips existence down to its barest despair.

From horizon to horizon, the landscape is a uniform spectrum of grey: desolate plains, dead trees, and lifeless skies. No sun, moon, stars, or seasons mark the passage of time. Any bright colour brought into Hades fades to muted grey in days or weeks, as if the plane actively absorbs its vibrancy. Even the air seems heavy with dullness, muting sound and draining emotion. Visitors often find their motivations ebbing away until they feel as hollow as the wastes around them.

Inhabitants

Though barren of hope, Hades is not empty. Hardy, malignant beings that thrive in desolation roam its grey wastes, including daemons (yugoloths), mercenary fiends who personify apathy and manipulation; diakka, bird-like fiends with inscrutable motives; achaierai, viper-like daemonic serpents; nightmares, hellish steeds drawn to the despairing; and mephits and night hags, fiendish spirits and witches who lurk in solitude or scheming covens. These beings rarely engage in open war, instead manoeuvring and scheming, exploiting apathy and decay to further their inscrutable ends.

Adventuring in Hades

Adventuring in Hades is as much a test of spirit as of body. Its pervasive greyness and aura of despair drain even the most resolute travellers. Hope, ambition, and memories slowly fade, and persistent exposure can dull emotions and motivation or even strip identity entirely. Bright hues, triumphant music, and sensory joy lose their intensity, reinforcing the gloom, while the grey earth and ash-filled air sap vitality and may inflict spiritual exhaustion.

Unclaimed or lost souls gradually transform into larvae, becoming prey for hags or currency among fiends. Hades is not a plane of fiery torment or constant battle; its danger is nihilistic and subtle, a place where surrender feels easier than resistance, and even magic meant to inspire courage or joy struggles against the plane’s oppressive nature.
