Description
Pandemonium is an infinite labyrinth of twisting caverns and tunnels, carved and scoured by relentless, howling winds. Gravity is fluid, always pulling toward the nearest surface, so travelers can walk on walls, ceilings, or drop into vast chasms with dizzying perspective shifts. The plane is divided into four layers: Pandesmos, Cocytus, Phlegethon, and Agathion, each marked by progressively narrower tunnels. Rivers of hardened water flow along ceilings, walls, and even through the air in narrow tunnels. Fires are easily extinguished by the endless gusts, and the constant roar of the wind blurs sound, making communication nearly impossible. Light is partially absorbed in Phlegethon, while magical properties of the rock can alter spells and perception. Travelers are battered by flying grit, stones, and occasional boulders, and only the most careful adventurers can hope to navigate the shifting, chaotic terrain.
Inhabitants
The primary inhabitants of Pandemonium are the Shattered, humanoids exiled long ago for crimes or transgressions now lost to memory. They dwell in isolated caverns throughout Pandesmos and Cocytus, cultivating meager plants, hunting small creatures, and jealously guarding their scarce resources. Scattered across the endless tunnels roam Windshades, incorporeal wraiths drawn to the plane’s chaos, swarms of Siltrats, and chaotic demons exiled from other realms. Legends whisper of Vor’ul, a titanic, cave-shattering monstrosity trapped deep in Agathion, and of lost civilizations carved into Cocytus and Phlegethon, their ruins filled with forgotten magic and eerie echoes of a bygone era.
Adventuring in Pandemonium
Adventurers must contend with disorienting tunnels, deafening winds, and deadly environmental hazards. Magic functions normally, but fire is easily snuffed and thunder has limited range. Ranged attacks suffer, and smaller creatures risk being blown prone. Survival relies on resourcefulness, as food is scarce and water is often dangerous.
